Boeing is the world's leading aerospace company and the largest manufacturer of both commercial jetliners and military aircraft. They hold capabilities in rotorcraft, electronic and defense systems, missiles, satellites, launch vehicles and advanced information and communication systems. Their reach extends to customers in 145 countries around the world, and are the number one U.S. exporter in terms of sales.
Boeing demands excellence and quality from all vendors, and specifically manages those with strict guidelines for proven engineering, design, and performance. Boeing was entertaining proposals from all of the big name major systems manufacturers. AIS offered all of the amenities important to Boeing, plus design and layout ideas that the others did not offer. AIS and McMahan Business Interiors demonstrated their ability to more thoroughly understand the needs of Boeing in this hoteling environment and, in turn, were awarded the contract. The serpentine and pinwheel layout fit nicely in the floorplan and provided a more interesting work environment than a typical box layout.
Additionally, Boeing was impressed that a small manufacturer like AIS won the Shingo Prize in 2003 for excellence in lean manufacturing, and was one of only a handful of small companies to ever do so.
